 Awareness and screening  health camps were  organized by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare , Government of India (NCD division) at India International Trade Fair , Pragati Maidan , New Delhi from 14th to 27th November,2016 .There were a total of 7 health camps to screen the visitors for the major non-communicable diseases(cancer, diabetes, CVD’s , hypertension and oral health).

Under this programme, Centre for Dental Education and Research, AIIMS participated to screen the visitors for the common dental problems, oral cancer  as well as generate oral health awareness in collaboration with nominees from the Ministry. A team of doctors (2 Faculty, 3 Senior Residents / 5 Junior Residents, 1 RO, 1SRF) were deputed on this duty in rotation for the morning and evening shifts.

A total of 5000 visitors were screened for the various common oral diseases and oral lesions during this 14 days Screening Shivir by the CDER, AIIMS team. The visitors were referred to our centre for the management of various oral problems. Health promotion badges , stickers and pamphlets especially designed for the programme were distributed to all the visitors during this camp. A total of 500 badges 500 stickers and 1000 pamphlets were distributed in all. There were a total of three dental chairs made functional for this purpose.  All the infra –structure for the camp was arranged by the Ministry.

An LED screen adjacent to the camp played videos throughout the day on proper brushing technique. There was one LCD screen at the camp which continuously display 80 minutes videos on oral diseases, correct brushing technique ,amount of toothpaste to be used during brushing, eating habits for healthy gums and teeth  and oral cancer awareness .Posters  covering  an array of topics from periodontal flaps ,crowns, implants , dentures,  facial injuries and their management, ill –effects of tobacco use and healthy eating habits were displayed at the camp .Leaflets  imparting valuable information on mantainence of good oral health  in different age groups  from childhood through old age were distributed to all. Badges brushing messages such as “ Brush din mein do baar , do minute har baar“ , “My Smile is so lovely as my teeth are pearly” and “Healthy Smile makes you bright, Brush your teeth morning and night”-promoting oral health and awareness were  given to all.

The “Pledge against Tobacco”-signature campaign and  selfie corner-“Wall of Smiles” was very popular among the visitors.

Oral Health Promotion activities:

·         Health Education

·         Tobacco cessation counseling- importance of quitting the habit, ill-effects of tobacco on oral and systemic health followed by referral to tobacco cessation clinics for review

·         Screening of school children in the age group of 8-15 years

·         Motivating parents to encourage healthy brushing habits, eating practices and regular visits to the dentist among their children

·         Oral cancer screening-identifying risk factors , premalignant lesions and oral cancer.

·         Preventive advice-To school teachers ,parents and adults for care of teeth and gums from childhood to old age with emphasis on the importance of a healthy balanced diet

·         Correct Brushing technique and importance of maintaining a good oral health
